Why do humans lie so much? Or, to put it another way, why do we love telling stories so much? Answering these questions is a never-ending project. But the clues to the answers are hidden in our languages. In our language is a history of storytelling, a map of everywhere we’ve ever been, and an account of all the lies we’ve ever told. It is our guest’s job to search through our language and uncover the clues hidden in our lies, like a deception detective. In this episode of Think Fast Talk Smart, our guest is the brilliant Laura Spinney. Laura is the author of books including Pale Rider and Proto. The latter is an investigation into the history of a dead language. With our host, Matt Abrahams, she talks about a wide range of topics, from the history of that dead language which was never written down, to how deception detection techniques can help you sniff out any and all lies you encounter! In the episode, Matt and Laura discuss: • Deception Detection Techniques, and why you aren’t as good at detecting lies as you think. • A history of storytelling, and what makes a good story. • The origins of language, and why studying a dead language that was never written down helps us today • Language Families, and how they can be used to track the histories of entire ethnic groups And here’s something that is guaranteed to tickle you… During the episode, Laura traces the geographical movements of the nomadic Romani people just by noticing where the words they use come from, and, most importantly, where they don’t! Key Quotes • “[Good stories] have this capacity to revive what eyewitnesses might have seen, sort of put us in a place as if we’re there at the action.” – Laura Spinney (07:07) • “Imagine trying to tell a story to somebody … your friend in the pub … where there are competing demands on their attention … how are you going to draw them in? How are you going to get the information across to them, and how are you going to make them care?” – Laura Spinney (18:13) Chapters 00:00 Introduction 00:44 The Power & Bluntness of Language 01:32 Deception Detection 03:36 A History of Storytelling 06:41 What Makes a Good Story 10:04 The Origins of Language 12:51 Language Families 17:47 Matt’s 3 Questions 21:04 Conclusion Episode References: Laura Spinney: https://www.fastersmarter.io/guests/l...
