(19 Aug 1995) T/I: 10:17:33 The UN in Bosnia admitted on Saturday (19/8) that it is experiencing difficulty in extricating the small detachment of Ukrainian peacekeepers from the UN-designated "safe area" of Gorazde. The 90-strong force was ordered to withdraw earlier this week after it was decided their situation had become untenable. As they prepare to withdraw, all their weapons -- except for one rifle -- have been stolen. Their vehicles have been taken as well, except for one broken down truck. They now have the task of locating the equipment missing from their UN inventory. The thefts are alleged to have been carried out by both Bosnian Government troops and the Bosnian Serb Army. The Bosnian Serbs say they will not allow the Ukrainians to depart until they can account for the missing equipment. In Sarajevo, UN spokesman Alexander Ivanko said many of the Ukrainian personal belonging have also been stolen, putting the blame on the BIH troops. UN military spokesman, Chris Vernon said they still have some things left - office and cooking equipment for example which they will try to recover.
