Day 280, 40 weeks old, 45 pounds #PandaStory: A question was asked the other day if Xiao Qi Ji ever sleeps in the den anymore, my response was that 99% of the time, he sleeps by his door ... the first scene shows one of the rare times he's slept on the rockwork. This was about 3:45am this morning after a nursing bout (no audio available), and it wasn't until around 5:30am that he moved from this spot. Second scene ~ he just climbed his tree and was out on the branches, when he lost his balance and clung to the branch! Amazing upper body strength and perseverance shows how he righted himself, and eventually made his way back to the tree trunk and branch where he usually naps. About 1:30pm Qi Ji made his way to the Panda House where Mei Xiang was enjoying some treats. Looks like a keeper tried to give him a piece of apple down low, but he got it up high. After a bit, he walked away from that piece and "stole" the apple that had been given to Mei Xiang. As if he knew it was momma's, he raced very quickly to his tree and up he went with his prize! Shortly after he fireman slides his way down his tree to follow Mei Xiang back to the patio area where they enjoyed some biscuits. When they come indoors, Qi Ji's on the platform in room 2's bedroom enjoying some more treats, and Mei shows up to make sure she gets her fair share. Out in room 2 Qi Ji does some door walking as he carries some pieces of bamboo. Shortly after, Mei's trying to rest when Qi Ji shows up in room 2's playpen. And I really had to laugh ... Giant Pandas are very flexible, but Qi Ji kept grabbing, bending, and biting Mei Xiang's back leg that was dangling over the edge! And flop ... it'd go back to dangling, and he kept doing that over and over! Silly bear! When Mei had enough "bear hugs" and bites, she tries to eat bamboo in the front of the room ... but Qi Ji had a case of the friskies or zoomies, and climbed on her head ... so off to room 3 they went. After trying to grab Mei's paw or bamboo (not really clear), he did nurse (not shown as he was immersed in bamboo). Afterward he worked on his bamboo eating skills, and looked absolutely adorable doing so, although he's probably not eating much of it. Then it was off to his door, where eventually he fell asleep around 4pm. New Zoo blog ~ Qi Ji is 45 pounds! https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/ne... And kudos to all of you faithful Panda Cam viewers that visit this channel to follow Qi Ji's journey! Some days the lack of a dedicated Panda Cam operator frustrates me, but I try to cobble together something, and you guys continue to watch, and share your delight at seeing Qi Ji learn to be a bear under the amazing tutelage of his very experienced mother Mei Xiang. Thank you so much for your continued support, thoughtful comments, and for building such an awesome community here!
