NEW SEASON: PORTUGAL POV Sintra, Portugal or, "Glorious Eden". A real take without the travel vlogger hype. It's the content I wish I had watched before I went to Portugal. Sintra, Portugal, is frequently celebrated as one of the most beautiful towns in the world, and for good reason. Nestled in the lush, green hills of the Serra de Sintra, just a short trip from Lisbon, it’s a place that feels like it’s been lifted from a fairy tale. Hans Christian Andersen, the renowned Danish author of fairy tales, visited Sintra, Portugal, in 1866 and was deeply inspired by its enchanting, fairy-tale-like landscapes, which resonated with his imaginative storytelling. His time in Sintra is documented in his travelogue "A Visit to Portugal" where he described the town’s magical beauty, likening it to a blend of his native Denmark and other beloved landscapes. Known for fairy tales like The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, and The Snow Queen, he was a prolific traveler who believed “to travel is to live” (my kind of guy). Sintra’s lush greenery, misty hills, and fantastical palaces, such as Pena Palace and Monserrate, struck a chord with Andersen’s creative sensibilities, evoking the mythical and romantic settings of his stories. And he's not the only one... Lord Byron, the famed Romantic poet, visited Sintra, Portugal, in 1809 and was deeply captivated by its enchanting beauty, which he described in his epic poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage and in personal correspondence. Here are his most notable quotes about Sintra, reflecting its fairy-tale, Rivendell-like allure: In Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage (Canto I, 1812), he refers to Sintra (then spelled Cintra) as a “glorious Eden” and writes: “Lo! Cintra’s glorious Eden intervenes. This captures Sintra’s lush Huxley landscapes and fantastical architecture, evoking a magical, otherworldly place akin to Tolkien’s Rivendell. In a letter to his friend Francis Hodgson, dated July 16, 1809, Byron declared: “I must just observe, that the village of Cintra is the most beautiful, perhaps, in the world.” In another letter to his mother, he elaborated: “Sintra . . . contains beauties of every description, natural and artificial. Palaces and gardens rising in the midst of rocks, cataracts and precipices; convents on stupendous heights, a distant view of the sea and the Tagus.” Lord Byron was in awe of Sintra’s lush, misty hills, dramatic cliffs, and romantic palaces, which resemble the ethereal, elven beauty of Tolkien's Rivendell in the Lord of the Rings. His vivid descriptions helped cement Sintra’s reputation as a must-visit destination, as noted in various sources. Sintra's UNESCO World Heritage status, earned for its 19th-century Romantic architecture and stunning landscapes, puts it in the running for the highest of accolades. The town is famous for its colorful palaces, like the Pena Palace with its vibrant red and yellow towers, and the mystical Quinta da Regaleira with its gothic spires and enigmatic Initiation Well. These, combined with its misty microclimate and winding cobblestone streets, give Sintra a dreamlike charm that’s hard to beat. Travel publications and websites often rank Sintra highly for its beauty, many describing it as a "magical" or "storybook" destination, calling it one of Europe’s prettiest spots. Condé Nast Traveler and others have highlighted its unique blend of natural splendor and architectural whimsy, often placing it alongside other global gems like Santorini or Cinque Terre. Ultimately, Sintra’s combination of lush greenery, palatial estates, and a vibe that feels both timeless and otherworldly lands it on many "most beautiful" lists. Personally, I felt honored to be here and I'd go back again in heartbeat. #portugal #sintra #fairytales --- Life Coaching: https://calendly.com/shanetylermilson...
