This video is meant to highlight the extreme precision and high resolution pressure control capabilities of an Equilibar® back pressure regulator. The height of a column of fluid (the level in a tank) is directly controlled by applying the desired column height as an air pilot signal to the dome of the Equilibar back pressure regulator (BPR). The Equilibar BPR is so accurate that it will faithfully mimic the pilot pressure on its controlled (inlet) pressure port. In example, if an 18 inH2O pilot pressure signal (as seen on the round pressure gauge) is applied to the pilot port of the Equilibar BPR, the Equilibar BPR will modulate to control 18 inches of water pressure on its inlet port. This pressure is reflected as water height in the column and is measured by the yardstick. The water column height, as measured by the yardstick, should always match the water pilot pressure on the round gauge (seen in units of inH20), and the demo shows that this actually works very well. While this demonstration is meant to showcase the amazingly smooth high resolution of the Equilibar regulator, there are a few practical applications for this approach to level control. In example, if the fluid were foamy, bubbly, sticky, corrosive, consisting of mixed phases, or in any other way problematic for traditional level control methods, then this approach might work. The Equilibar can be manufactured from a wide variety of materials for chemical compatibility and is available from ¼ inch to 4-inch body sizes. The pilot pressure signal in the video is from an Equilibar QPV series electronic pressure regulator. It has a full-scale calibration of 0 to 10 VDC = 0 to 1 psig.
