City Life|

When talking about Suzhou, people always think of her paradise-like splendor and beauty. The most representative features of the ancient city are the beautiful gardens and the alleys built along the waterways. The lesser-known Fengmen Hengjie is an ancient alley with Suzhou characteristics. In the alleys of Suzhou, there may be hidden gardens and houses, or temples, or a few small shops, and more often the homes of ordinary people. However, the alley of Suzhou Fengmen Hengjie is a bustling vegetable market, which is really rare. This naturally formed street market has a long history. According to historical records, Fengmen was first built in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. The gatehouse was rebuilt in the early Qing Dynasty, and the title "Clear Reflection of the Stream" was inscribed by Hanlin Gu Si. In the past, farmers in the eastern part of Suzhou had to row boats to transport lotus roots, chickens, ducks, fish, shrimps, rice, wild rice, water celery, etc. along the Fengmen Pond waterway to Hengjie for trading. Hengjie is about 500 to 600 meters long and can accommodate three to four people walking side by side. The road surface still retains the bluestone roadbed from hundreds of years ago. Today, these are no longer in existence, but this alley named after Fengmen is still crowded and prosperous. Fengmen Hengjie, located on the north bank of Fengxi River outside Fengmen in Gusu District, Suzhou City, is 690 meters long and 5 meters wide. Most of the buildings on the street still retain the style of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, with the street in front and the river behind, and the river and the street running parallel. The atmosphere of fireworks in the world is the most soothing to ordinary people's hearts. As an old street full of life, Hengjie has a full range of vegetables, fruits, and special snacks. This is where Suzhou people have been eating since childhood. As soon as you step into the ancient street, the old alleys are crowded with people: people buying vegetables, selling vegetables, doing small business, eating snacks, and the motorcycles, electric vehicles and trolleys used by the elderly to buy vegetables that appear from time to time in the crowd make it difficult for people to move and leave images. The shops on both sides are placed randomly, even a little messy, but it gives people a natural sense of intimacy. The operators also seem not to treat you as outsiders. At Wu's Tofu Shop, we stood at the door and could directly see how tofu and other soy products were made in the shop. Each process was straightforward and customers standing in front of the door could see it clearly. There were also fresh and tender wild rice stems, water chestnuts, lotus roots and other traditional delicacies on the tables of Suzhou people on the street. Shops are next to shops, and storefronts are connected to storefronts. The cakes and wontons that Suzhou people love to eat are still steaming when they are on the market; juicy carrots, green vegetables, struggling chickens and ducks, and hand-peeled shrimps by vendors sitting by the door. If you walk around casually, you can find almost all the things you need at home. My friend in Suzhou told me that if you haven't been to Fengmen Hengjie, you don't know the life of Suzhou, let alone the life of Suzhou people. In order to take pictures of real Suzhou people, I got up early and rushed to Fengmen Hengjie to start my own shooting.#foodie #streetfood #chinafood #suzhou
