This is a short discussion as to how I became a retina specialist and board certified ophthalmologist in Fairfax, Virginia. To become a retina specialist I had to go to medical school after graduating from college. I went to Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia after graduating from Haverford College. Once medical school was complete, I was an intern in the Internal Medicine department at The Bryn Mawr Hospital. This lasted one year and was a requirement before starting Ophthalmology residency which was another 3 years at Georgetown University. I was still not a retina specialist at this point. Additional fellowship training allows me to function as a retina specialist. My fellowship was in Memphis, TN with Drs. Steve Charles and Maurice Landers. Following fellowship, I had to pass a test which makes me a Board Certified Ophthalmologist. Board certification is good for general ophthalmology, that is, my board certification is in general ophthalmology and not my retina sub-specialty. To date, there is no special certification for a retina specialist. Hope you like this video. Randall Wong, M.D. www.RetinaEyeDoctor.com
