TLDR; I've always wanted to climb My Infested Destiny, but finding it was a pain in the ass—and my first session was limited for time... Luckily, I returned the following weekend and put it down! ⛰️ The first time I ever came to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway was in May 2019. I went straight to the ranger station and bought a Tram Bouldering guidebook. I was perplexed by all the silly, outdated clip art haphazardly placed next to the hand-drawn topos. The Dance Floor was the first destination, since I had my heart set on doing Swing Dance first (which I did!). After spending more time looking though the book, I stumbled upon My Infested Destiny and was intrigued by the photo of the gorgeous jagged rock, but discouraged by of the description of locating it... (Tram has a reputation of being difficult to navigate.) I thought, One day, I will climb My Infested Destiny—and used the guidebook sale receipt as a bookmark reminder. Two years—and two broken feet later, I decided to empower myself and stop feeling held back by painful uphill/downhill hiking and find this boulder I'd fantasized about. By chance, I started climbing with Steven, who was equally as stoked to search for this gem with me and invest whatever time it required. We spent half of a Saturday on what felt like an expedition. After sending Tree Attack by the early afternoon, I had drank both of my two liters of water, and Steven was out of water as well. Generously, he took the time to trek back to the ranger station to fill up all our bottles. Once he returned, we spent almost 3 hours on the hunt for My Infested Destiny. From The Singularity, we followed the directions in the guidebook to try to locate M.I.D., but ended up too far east, then wayyy too far south (up another hill). Eventually, by 7:30 PM or so, we approached it from the back side and were elated to have finally found it! I set a 45 minute timer on my phone to remind us when we needed to start heading back in order to catch the last tram down at 9:00. Unfortunately, both my feet were EXHAUSTED and so sore from hiking; I barely pulled on the problem. Steven made quick work of the bottom section and arrived at the crux just in time for us to have to say goodbye and start walking back to the tram station as it grew dark. We scrambled down a different gully than we came up and got a bit disoriented trying to locate the main trail. As we exerted our last energy marching up the steep incline of the concrete ramp, an employee yelled, "Last call for last tram." We made it just in time to literally be the last people to join the final boarding group. Too much excitement for one day, haha. I felt annoyed and defeated because I was unable to give My Infested Destiny any serious attempts at the end of the long day, when our time was so limited. Steven, however, kept the stoke for the both of us until the following week when we returned to My Infested Destiny to give it the proper attention it deserved. The problem itself isn't very difficult—probably one of the softer V7s I've sent recently. In my previous session, I only pulled off the ground for my flash attempt and to work a couple moves/sections from a stand start, without much progress at all. During the second session, I was inspired to watch Steven conquer it within a few tries. I was hoping I'd do the same and not waste everyone's time who was along for the venture. I felt fortunate when it took me only two attempts to top it out, starting from the crack in the block. My beta was to use small foot holds on the arête to reach the sloping bulge with my right hand, and then come into a horizontal crack with my left hand. I was stoked to figure out original beta that felt natural and somewhat effortless for me, but I was nervous about figuring out the bottom section because of seeing how much power it seemingly required. As the sun went behind the hill, I thoroughly brushed the lower holds and asked for a rundown on all the beta (haha, typical). Somehow, I pulled through in the beginning sequence without a hitch! I did the top section with my same beta I'd just figured out, and then took it to the top! Standing atop this boulder felt surreal. I was ecstatic to send it with efficiency and few attempts... But it was the investment in—what felt like at the time—wasted energy and time the previous weekend to find My Infested Destiny that made me feel relieved it had payed off. I always try to remember there's more value in something when there's a previous defeat. And that's what makes this victory that much more meaningful! ⚡ Video recorded 07/17/2021. ▶️ WATCH MORE on my Tramway playlist: • Tramway 🔴 SUBSCRIBE 🔔 to my channel to see when I post new videos!
