Mastoiditis is basically an inflammation or swelling or infection of the mastoid. Mastoid bone is the bone which reservoirs or which houses the hearing mechanism. So whenever it is infected, it is called as mastoiditis. Most of the time there are two types of mastoiditis. One is an acute mastoiditis, or a chronic mastoiditis. An acute mastoiditis is an acute emergency as the name suggests it has to be treated as soon as possible.
