THE PROJECT One of the most dramatic moments in our day is that moment when the sun is just starting to wain in the west. “The Golden Hour” The hour when the sky and landscape is washed in golden hues. Today we look to capture this fleeting moment with a palette oriented towards warm hues a few graded washes, and a strong tonal contrast. THE DRAWING The drawing is built around a large tree - blocking the view of the sun. Behind is mostly a warm atmosphere with suggestions of distant mountains and trees. Compositional Stem A Cross or T forms the compositional stem illustrated in the drawing below the point of intersection - the horizontal and vertical - form a sort of epicenter in the painting holding the eye in place and provide a resting place for the eye. highlights from the low sun Through the mid ground - our stage - is a small fence and a path both with 1- The path forms a lead into the stage or the area where I am showing the effect of the low sun 2 - The direction of the shadows and the direction created by the lights on the grasses carries us back into the piece THE TECHNIQUE The technique in this painting is built on wet into wet in the background and dry technique in the mid and foreground. Though the photograph shows a very active background we can use soft edges and gradual transitions to acheive more drama with 2 less work. We save the hard edges and strong contrast for the edges of the main tree and the fence and some of the grasses. In the foreground we again use a soft approach so that everything melts into shadows. THE CHALLENGE I found several challenges in creating this piece Finding and executing the main shapes of Mountain, tree and path. Part of the challenge was to isolate them visually from their surroundings - I find squinting helps me in doing this. Creating the movement of light through graded washes. The transitions - gradations we use in the background create the light unique in this painting. Embellishing on these basic ideas. I wanted to guide the light over the grassy area and to the lower right of the painting. Forging a connection when there was not one helped me to do this. THE SKILL In this project we build on our technical skills using wet into wet technique - Background and foreground with dry technique We develop the textural elements of trees and grasses We develop our perceptual abilities by see the connections in the darks - tree to shadow And lights The path of light over the grasses
