I lived abroad for three years. I could shop. I could eat out. I could travel. I could even make small talk. But when it came to deeper discussions at work, I couldn’t express myself clearly. I couldn’t fully understand newspapers or the news. That’s when I realized: Real conversation depends on vocabulary and grammar. Conversation is not where ability is built.
