"One Way Ticket to the West" (2025). Documentary film created to mark the 35th anniversary of the Open Estonia Foundation brings viewers the story of a remarkable philanthropic organization that played a significant role in Estonia’s restoration of independence and continues to be an important pillar of civil society and grassroots initiative today. The Foundation’s overarching mission and achievement has been to support and help define an open society in Estonia. The documentary shows how one organization was able to provide both material and intellectual support to Estonia at a critical moment in its history - and continues to do so to this day. The Foundation was more than just a financial supporter; it was a bearer of ideas and values that still brings together different groups in society around a shared purpose. The film introduces the Foundation’s history, the people who have contributed to its work, and the projects and initiatives without which Estonia’s public space would be hard to imagine today . We present untold stories as well as photo and video footage that help viewers understand Estonia’s development from a slightly different perspective than they may be accustomed to.
