The National Unity Platform’s (NUP) shock decision to deny Medard Lubega Sseggona the party ticket for Busiro East — handing it instead to local music icon Mathias Walukagga — has ignited a political firestorm. Among the loudest voices in the backlash is none other than Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, who has launched a scathing attack on the party’s judgment. In a stunning rebuke, Ssemujju claimed that Uganda’s Parliament is sliding back into its dark past — a time, he says, when voters sent “stupid people” to represent them, branding them with the derogatory term “Kapere.” His remarks have struck a nerve, exposing a deeper anxiety within the opposition about the quality of leadership emerging under the NUP banner. But here's the inconvenient truth Ssemujju seems to gloss over: perhaps Ugandans are simply tired of the so-called “credible” leaders who eventually cave in and sell out to President Museveni. The list of turncoats is long and growing — from Thomas Tayebwa to Anita Among — individuals once hailed as the future of the opposition, now firmly entrenched in the ruling establishment. By writing off Mathias Walukagga before he’s even set foot in Parliament, Ssemujju risks sounding out of touch with the very electorate he claims to speak for. How can he be so certain Walukagga is unfit, when he hasn't been given a single day to prove himself? This isn't just about one constituency — it's about the soul of the opposition, and whether it trusts the people to make bold, sometimes unconventional, choices. The real question now: is Ssemujju defending standards, or gatekeeping power?
