This is baby Christian's first time at Physical Therapy. Christian is was 5 weeks premature due to me having preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a pregnancy condition that could result in death of both mother and baby via stroke or seizure. Once my blood pressure hit 200/115 the doctors decided to induce me. After being induced for several hours, they found out his heart rate was dipping and had to do an emergency c-section. Once they took him out of me they found out that he had an umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. He then had to spend about 2 weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and emergency room. Christian had low blood sugar that we were trying to keep it at least on boarder, if the blood sugar is too low, that can cause brain damage. Christian also had high Jaundice which caused him to be lethargic and didn't help is low blood sugar. Our little tough guys has been through so much and still has a few kinks to work out. I thank God for holding our hand through this rough time in our life. As an experienced parent I knew something was a little off with Christian. I could not tell if the difference was because he was a boy, his personality, or because he was a premature. I am glad he is not my first or I might not have been able to tell the difference in development. Doctors are saying that he has not been "baking in the oven" long enough so he just needs a little more time. We hope that with the physical therapy our pediatrician referred us to, it will help. He is nine months old but his adjusted age is 8 months. We post these video's of his playtime/theropy so as to help others learn how to play with their baby to help their development. Another reason we are posting is because this is how we communicate with the physical therapist. They watch his video to observe his progress so they know how he is progressing during our next visit. More info on his development will be added soon... July 17, 2013 Christian's Homework 1) Increase floor time! Christian should be spending most of his awake time on the floor playing! Always start with him on his back, help him roll to his tummy, and then allow him to play on his tummy for several minutes. If he rolls to his back, great, give him a rest and then help him roll to his tummy again 2) In sitting, always have his toys spread out in a semi-circle around him to encourage him to reach outside his base of support to practice both his balance and his strength 3) rolling: practice rolling back to tummy by stabilizing his top leg then allowing him to rotate his trunk and lift his head into tummy time. This is best done if he is trying to reach for a toy
