Misplaced Shapes: A Three Dimensional Exploration of Forms

My name is Mike Carpenter and I'm a photographer and videographer currently living in Denton, TX attending the University of North Texas. I started a project about 2 years ago that follows the fictional lives of various three dimensional shapes and how they interact with the world we live in. These shapes are created digitally and later composited into familiar scenes around my community to create a sense of awe and wonder. Metaphorically these shapes are meant to represent the constant intrusion of technology and aesthetically pleasing forms that repeatedly bombard us through advertising in this digital age. Through working with these ideas I have expanded the conceptual back stories behind these shapes to suggest they are slowly intruding into our everyday lives. The video above shows my first attempt at showing the symbolic "homeland" of these beings by taking myself into their world instead of showing them venturing out into ours. I want to expand this work into other states and fictionally document this upheaval and struggle of power between the two beings. The final product would be a huge collection of photographs serving as the social documentation of this fictional epidemic accompanied by a 30-60 minutes film across the country showing the way in which these shapes live and interact with our race and ultimately ending up at their utopian society of perfect design and aestheticism. Although due to financial restrictions I've been constrained to cheap equipment and the city of Denton as my environment for this work. I've received excellent feedback from all my professors at the University and have been encouraged to push this as far as I can. I decided to reach out to the Kickstarter community for help to upgrade my equipment to something that could truly create this collaboration of conceptual photography and videography. The funds would cover the purchase of the BlackMagic Ursa video camera, a Canon 5D MKIII photo camera, and travel costs.
