In March 1606, a small Dutch Ship called Duyfken (Little Dove) met the Wik people as it sailed along the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, resulting in the earliest recorded contact between Europeans and First Nations Australians. In this video Matt Poll, The Manager of Indigenous Programs at the Australian National Maritime Museum, tells us about the Wik People and the relationship they had with the lands and waters for thousands of years. Watch the rest of the series to discover more about this encounter. • 1606 – Contact at Cape Keerweer Check out '1606 - Contact at Cape Keerweer' for the full unit of work aligned to the Australian National Curriculum.
