Protestors have told hunt supporters they ‘wont’ go away’ as hundreds gathered in Tiverton to see the sight of hounds and horses heading through the town. The annual Boxing Day meet is a tradition going back decades in Tiverton, where the Tiverton Foxhounds meet outside the Half Moon pub at 11am before trotting through Fore Street. For the last three years they have been welcomed by protestors holding placards and making their voices heard to the crowds. Andy Perris, a Tiverton Town Council member with the party LIFT said: “We’ve protested the hunt for three years in a row now, apart from the gap in the pandemic. We brought a motion to Tiverton Town Council to oppose it and the majority of people in Tiverton do oppose it and we have evidence from the League Against Cruel Sports to support that. “We believe that trail hunting is a lie. They’re still killing animals when they shouldn’t be killing and they’re still behaving illegally, and we oppose the hunt meeting here in Tiverton town centre this morning. “My message to people here today is to read the literature, come and talk to us; we don’t believe that hunting should be in the town.” On the atmosphere at the protest being in among supporters of the hunt, Mr Perris added: “Obviously the majority of people are fine and friendly, however there are a small minority who are quite challenging. In the past we’ve had horses ridden at us, placards pulled out of hands and unnecessary behaviour, and we find that that shouldn’t be the way people should behave. “We won’t go away; we’ll bring the motion back to Tiverton Town Council again. The majority of people in this country do not believe with hunting with hounds and we feel Tiverton should reflect that.” Addressing the crowd, Demelza Barnes, from the Tiverton Foxhounds said: “What a wonderful sight to see so many supporters this morning. Thank you all so much for coming. It is heartwarming to think that there will be similar sights throughout the country with people joining the packs to enjoy the traditional festive occasion. I would like to thank the Half Moon pub for hosting today and looking after us so well. “Today’s collection is for our hunt staff to show our appreciation for all they do at kennels keeping hounds and horses in top condition throughout the season. Like many of us here today with animals over the Christmas period, the work doesn’t stop so thank you to Harry our huntsman, and his team for keeping the show on the road over this festive period. “We are trail hunting within the law and our brilliant trail layers have already been busy this morning laying our first trail of the day. “A final and very special thankyou must go to our wonderful farmers and landowners for allowing us over their land. Thank you so much. “We wish you all and your families a happy and healthy new year.” It is estimated that over 200 packs of hounds – including foxhounds, beagles, harriers, basset hounds, draghounds and bloodhounds – held their Boxing Day meets outside pubs, in town centres and on other land suitable for safely accommodating the large crowds of people whose enthusiasm for hunting showed no signs of waning more than 17 years since the Hunting Act was passed. Polly Portwin, the Countryside Alliance’s director of the campaign for hunting welcomed the return of Boxing Day meets: “Boxing Day meets bring thousands of people together: be it families, friends, neighbours or those within our community who may otherwise be isolated over the festive period. Hunts play an important role in rural life with Boxing Day meets offering the public a chance to watch hunts showcase their hounds, horses and trail hunting activities. “Many of the tens of thousands of people that attended Boxing Day meets in public places today will have been supporting local cafes, shops and pubs which opened their doors to coincide with the hunt’s presence. Ms Portwin said: “The vast majority of meets see hundreds of local people come together to celebrate this annual tradition. However, while small in numbers, saboteurs routinely attempt to disrupt some festive meets and given the horrendous attack by a saboteur in Dorset last year, hunts and spectators are reminded not to engage with saboteur groups and to notify police of any violent or intimidating behaviour. “Anti-hunt groups had attempted to prevent a number of prominent meets from going ahead this year, but to no avail. In Tiverton one of the larger towns that routinely hosts meets, anti-hunt campaigners had attempted to stop the hunt from meeting in the town square. However, in March this year, town councillors overwhelmingly rejected a divisive motion which sought to outline the authority’s opposition to it.”
