The fourth chapter of the Hidden Big Island series takes us to the northeastern coast of the Big Island, beginning in the historic town of Honokaʻa. Once a thriving sugarcane plantation hub, Honokaʻa preserves its old-town charm, with vintage storefronts and signs bearing Japanese names—reflecting the legacy of Japanese immigrants who shaped this community. A Glimpse into Old Hawaiʻi Honokaʻa is known for its Honokaʻa People’s Theatre, which gained fame as the setting for the Japanese film Honokaʻa Boy. Walking through its main street, Waipiʻo Rd, one can still feel the nostalgia of old Hawaiʻi, where history and culture blend seamlessly. A Sweet Stop at Honokaʻa Chocolate Co. During our journey, we had the privilege of visiting the Honoka'a Chocolate Co. FACTORY STORE. Hawaiʻi is the only U.S. state to commercially grow cacao, and the company prides itself on using premium ingredients shaped by the island’s unique volcanic soil and climate, creating chocolate with a one-of-a-kind flavor profile. A Local Favorite: Tex Drive-In Honokaʻa sits along Hawaiʻi Route 19, the scenic road connecting Kailua-Kona and Hilo. Along this route, we stopped at the popular Tex Drive-In, a hotspot for both travelers and locals. Famous for its malasadas, this eatery attracts not only people but also small birds eagerly waiting for crumbs. The Sacred Waipiʻo Valley Just east of Honokaʻa lies the breathtaking Waipiʻo Valley, also known as the "Valley of the Kings." This sacred valley, surrounded by towering cliffs, is believed to hold the ancient burial sites of Hawaiian royalty, according to oral traditions. Historically, Waipiʻo Valley was a significant center of Hawaiian culture and home to high-ranking chiefs. However, access to the valley is now restricted by local authorities to preserve its delicate ecosystem and cultural heritage. Visitors can still view its stunning landscapes from the Waipiʻo Lookout, which offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the valley and ocean beyond. The video concludes with stunning aerial views of Waipiʻo Valley, capturing both its dramatic landscapes and the powerful ocean beyond.
