Andrew Leon Hanna, MBA ’22, wants to change the way the world thinks about refugees. In a LOWkeynote presentation, Leon Hanna explained how refugees are often characterized as “victims or villains.” On one end of the spectrum, they are called “pitiful human beings who need a handout.” On the other, they are accused of being “criminals” guilty of stealing jobs and contaminating culture. As Leon Hanna says, neither of these narratives is correct. “Refugees could not be further from these tropes,” he says. “Refugees are powerful, creative, inspiring people — some of the most resilient, innovative human beings on the planet.” According to Leon Hanna, there’s an economic case to be made for taking refugees in. “Refugees are some of the most entrepreneurial people on earth,” he says. Research finds that they are 1.5 to 2 times more entrepreneurial than native-born citizens, create millions of jobs, and contribute billions of dollars to the economy. On a more human level, Leon Hanna says refugees deserve peace and stability as much as anyone else, urging the world to welcome refugees and affirm that “Everyone is a powerful, beautiful, creative human being who deserves to be treated with equal respect and love.” This video is from LOWkeynotes: Student presentations on ideas that change lives, organizations, and the world. https://bit.ly/4eAR3HV
