Playing on his birthday, drummer Lee Pearson plays a virtuosic drum solo during Chris Botti's cover of the song "You Don't Know What Love Is" live in concert at SFJazz in San Francisco, California on January 4, 2023. You Don't Know What Love Is was originally sung by Carol Bruce for the 1941 Abbott & Costello film Keep 'Em Flying and the 1942 Ritz Brothers film Behind The Eight Ball. It has been covered by many, including Chet Baker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Benny Goodman, Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny Rollins, Nina Simone, Tony Bennett, and Dinah Washington. Botti released a cover of the song as a bonus track on his seventh studio album, When I Fall In Love (2004). Lee Pearson is an acclaimed jazz and hip hop drummer from Baltimore, Maryland who graduated from the Manhattan School Of Music and has toured and recorded with countless artists, including Chris Botti, Sting, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Spyro Gyra, Antonio Hart, Mike Stern, Chaka Khan, Lonnie Liston Smith, Hank Jones, James Carter, Kenny Garrett, Roy Hargrove, Casey Benjamin, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, and The Cab Calloway Orchestra. ======================= Lee Pearson official bio: Known as one of the most vibrant and electrifying drummers of our time, Lee Pearson continues to captivate the audience with his brilliant musical charm. Lee’s parents, Lee Sr. and Judith Pearson, bought his first drum set at the age of three and the rest was history. From Broadway, to Jazz, to R&B, to Hip Hop, to Gospel, Lee Pearson’s work is consistently excellent. Lee grooves and moves with some of the finest jazz artists in the world. He has recorded on notable Jazz and Funk recording projects with great musicians such as Hank Jones, Ron Carter, John Hicks, Kenny Barron, Christian McBride, Mike Stern, David Murray with the World Saxophone Quartet, Roy Ayers, Ronnie Laws, Lonnie Liston Smith, Wayne Henderson (from the Jazz Crusaders), Tom Brown and Hamiet Bluiett. In addition to recordings, Lee Pearson has toured with some of the world’s great pacesetters in Hip Hop and Jazz including Spyro Gyra, Cassandra Wilson, Mike Stern, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Roy Ayers, Chaka Khan, Bilah, Lonnie Listen Smith, Gene Con, Bobbi Humphreys, Ronnie Laws, Jon Lucien, Hank Jones, John Hicks, James Carter, Adam Rodger, John Medeski, Bobby Watson’s, Kenny Garrett, Little Jimmy Scott, Tim Warfield, Javon Jackson, Roy Hargrove, Casey Benjamin, Antonio Hart, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, The Cab Calloway Orchestra, Donald Harrison, Curtis Lundy, Wayne Henderson, David Murray, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno band.
