Conference Oscar Horta – Antispeciesism and helping animals in the wild – JMFS 2018

Antispeciesism entails active opposition to the discrimination of all animals, including both those that are exploited by humans and those who live in the wild. Concerning the latter, many people have an idyllic view according to which nature is like a great paradise to nonhuman animals. However, the evidence available shows this view is wrong, as there are several reasons why early death and terrible suffering prevail in the wild. In many cases there’s little we can do about this. But there are many other situations where help is being given to the animals who need it. Examples of this include rescues of trapped animals, hospitals and sanctuaries for sick, injured and orphan animals, and feeding and vaccination programs, among others. However, there’s little interest among life scientists, policy makers and even animal activists to investigate more about how to help animals in the wild more significantly. If we reject speciesism we should actively struggle to make disregard for these animals a thing of the past.
