The world's strongest military force against farmers with rifles—and they lost. The US Marine Corps arrived in Vietnam with the most advanced weapons, helicopters, and artillery, confident of victory within six months. But their M16 rifles jammed from humidity in critical seconds of combat. Radio stations went silent in the jungle, leaving soldiers blind. Bamboo booby traps killed more than enemy bullets. Aviation bombed empty forests, and artillery fired at shadows. They trained to fight an army—but faced an enemy without uniforms, without positions, without rules. Marines controlled the ground by day, but every night it belonged to the Vietcong. Beneath their feet stretched kilometers of tunnels where an invisible enemy hid. Over eight years of war, the Marine Corps conducted 485 operations, eliminated 100,000 enemies—and changed nothing. Because they prepared for a war that wasn't there. This is the story of how doctrine written for Europe became a death trap in Asian jungles.
