The Atlanta Autism Consortium's "Polypharmacy and Autism Spectrum Disorder" program on November 7, 2024. Individuals on the spectrum often require complex medication management to address symptoms of co-occurring conditions and core symptoms of ASD. Common co-occurring conditions that occur in individuals on the spectrum include ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and others. This presentation, led by Steve Jaffe, MD, a board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist, reviewed the common approaches of medical management, also referred to as psychopharmacology, for individuals on the spectrum. Moderators: Tyler Whitney, PsyD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, at Emory University School of Medicine; and Susan Brasher, PhD, RN, CPNP-PC, FAAN, Emory University Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing Presenter: Dr. Steven Jaffe, Professor Emeritus at Emory Medical School as well as a clinical professor of psychiatry at Morehouse College of Medicine About Steve Jaffe, MD: Dr. Jaffe is a pioneer in the development of treatment programs for substance abuse in adolescents and young adults. He did his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University and attended medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed a pediatric internship at UCLA and a psychiatric residency at Massachusetts Mental Health Center, where he was a teaching fellow at Harvard Medical School. A child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship was completed at Emory University. Presently, Dr. Jaffe is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Emory University and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Morehouse School of Medicine. Dr. Jaffe consults regularly, including the following: Atlanta Insight Enthusiastic Sobriety Program, the Nelson Price Adolescent Substance Abuse Program, and Recovery Outfitters. In addition. he is a psychiatric consultant to the National Football League. He received the President’s Award from Community Psychiatric Centers, Teaching Award from the Georgia Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and was named ‘Psychiatrist of the Year” by the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association. Dr. Jaffe has authored numerous papers and book chapters including the textbooks of child and adolescent psychiatry and the adolescent treatment chapter in the ASAM Textbook. Dr. Jaffe’s two workbooks structure treatment approaches for substance abuse in teens. Dr. Jaffe has also been Visiting Addiction Professor at the University of Hawaii and has given lectures and workshops throughout the United States, Australia and New Zealand.
