"Into Your hand I commit my spirit." These words, uttered by Jesus from the cross, find their home in Psalm 31—a psalm that travels through the deepest valleys of human suffering and emerges into the brightest light of trust and praise. This jazz arrangement follows the full arc of the psalm. It begins with resolute trust, a firm foundation of faith. Then it descends into the abyss: grief that wastes the eye, sorrow that consumes the years, the horror of being forgotten like a dead man, the terror of enemies on every side. The music becomes distorted, dragging, dissonant—because suffering is not neat. But in the darkness, a choice is made. A defiant cry: "BUT I... I TRUST IN YOU, O LORD! I SAY... 'YOU ARE MY GOD!' MY TIMES... ARE IN YOUR HAND!" And from that pivot of faith, the psalm rises. The distortion clears. The warmth returns. And the final word is not despair—it is an invitation: "Be strong... and let your heart take courage... all you who wait... for the LORD!" This original Jazz Psalm is part of the growing collection from Bible Inspired Music. LYRICS: (Verse 1) In You, O LORD, do I take refuge; Let me never be put to shame; In Your righteousness, deliver me! Incline Your ear to me; rescue me quickly! Be to me a rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me! For You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name's sake, You lead me and guide me. (Bridge 1) Into Your hand... I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God. (Verse 2) Be gracious to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; My eye is wasted from grief; My soul and my body also. For my life is spent with sorrow... And my years with sighing; My strength fails because of my misery... And my bones waste away. Because of all my adversaries, I have become a reproach... A horror to my neighbors... an object of dread to my acquaintances. I am forgotten... like a dead man... out of mind; I have become... like a broken vessel. For I hear the whispering of many— Terror is on every side!— As they scheme together against me... As they plot to take my life. (Chorus) BUT I... I TRUST IN YOU, O LORD! I SAY... "YOU ARE MY GOD!" MY TIMES... ARE IN YOUR HAND! Rescue me from the hand of my enemies... And from my persecutors! Make Your face shine... on Your servant; Save me... in Your steadfast love! (Outro) How abundant is Your goodness... Which You have stored up for those who fear You! In the cover of Your presence... You hide them. Blessed be the LORD... For He has wondrously shown His steadfast love to me! Love the LORD, all you His saints! The LORD preserves the faithful! Be strong... and let your heart take courage... All you who wait... for the LORD! Original NIV Text: 1 In you, Lord, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. 2 Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. 3 Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. 4 Keep me free from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge. 5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord, my faithful God. 9 Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief. 10 My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. 11 Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors and an object of dread to my closest friends— those who see me on the street flee from me. 12 I am forgotten as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery. 13 For I hear many whispering, "Terror on every side!" They conspire against me and plot to take my life. 14 But I trust in you, Lord; I say, "You are my God." 15 My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me. 16 Let your face shine on your servant; save me in your unfailing love. 19 How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you. 20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues. 21 Praise be to the Lord, for he showed me the wonders of his love when I was in a city under siege. 22 In my alarm I said, "I am cut off from your sight!" Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. 23 Love the Lord, all his faithful people! The Lord preserves those who are true to him, but the proud he pays back in full. 24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.
