In this video I show one way of obtaining inner bark from willow (Salix sp.) during winter that can be used as a cord for your bow drill. During the colder month the bark is much harder to remove, but there are different techniques you can use. The hard part, in this video, is probably cutting the bark strips. To make it easier you need a straight pole without any branches, and a sharp knife. Braiding makes a very durable cord so I prefer that. The cord looks very coarse and stiff, and it is. The softer you can get it before you start drilling the easier it will be. Otherwise, the drilling will make it softer. Keep the cord damp when you drill. I put it in a creek before I started to drill. There´s another way of removing the bark that gives you a softer, and in my opinion, better suited cord for drilling.
