The first ophthalmologist to receive the prestigious Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, he is a pioneer in the field of research on Glaucoma.He was moved by the adversities faced by people suffering from Glaucoma and specially the infants, it then became his life’s mission to work towards a better future for those suffering from the disease. He understood that blindness is also a social problem and is a staunchly believes that even an incurably blind child has his or her social rights and economic possibilities. Dr. Anil K. Mandal, born in Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal , graduated in medicine in 1981 from Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital of the University of Calcutta and moved to Dr R.P. Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi from where he secured an MD. Post which, he joined L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad where he is a consultant specializing in cataract, glaucoma and pediatric ophthalmology. He serves as a faculty of the Indian Association of Community Ophthalmology (INACO). Dr. Mandal has done thorough studies on glaucoma and is credited with the development of an alternative surgical protocol for treating pediatric glaucoma.He developed an integrated approach for treating glaucoma which encompassed selecting the correct surgical method, safeguarding residual vision, studying genetic characteristics and disseminating genetic counselling. His studies aided in expanding the understanding of glaucoma, particularly developmental glaucoma and pediatric glaucoma. His studies have been documented by over 75 articles and he also serves as a reviewer for the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology.
