Who invented the kilt pin and why? There's not much evidence for the use of the kilt pin prior to the mid-19th century, and even then they were not in universal use. The wearing of the kilt pin has steadily increased through the 20th century and it seems that at some point early on, Highland Dress sellers realized it was one more thing they could sell to gents who wanted to dress up. It soon came to be considered not just a bit of jewelry, but a necessity for the proper look. A modern kilt pin IS very useful and desirable as a wind weight - it keeps the front apron of the kilt from flapping about. And one legend holds that it was Queen Victoria who sort of mandated its invention by disliking how the aprons of her Scottish troops' kilts flapped while on parade. The pin does seem to have been used as a closure device on 19th century kilts - instead of ribbons and prior to the popularity of hip straps. At this time, it was also worn much higher - on the lower thigh. Do NOT do this with a modern kilt as it is likely to causing pulls in the fabric of the aprons and frankly is unnecessary. Do you need a kilt pin? Not really. Do you want one? Yeah, probably! They are ton of fun as an accessory and often used as an easy way to show your Clan membership.
