Join me on a walking tour of Castellar de la Frontera, an impressive Spanish fortress perched high on a mountaintop. The well-preserved castle walls are home to a small historic village. #cadiz #pueblosblancos #castellardelafrontera We start with a short walk up to the castle entrance and wander the peaceful old streets lined with traditional whitewashed houses decorated with flowering plants. We see breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, including the Guadarranque Reservoir (Embalse de Guadarranque). Castellar de la Frontera’s castle can be found in Spain’s southern Andalucia, around a 1.5-hour drive from the Costa del Sol's Malaga and a similar drive from Cadiz. But don’t confuse it with the new Castellar de la Frontera municipality, which is around a 20-minute drive away. Castillo de Castellar de la Frontera is one of Spain's "Pueblos Blancos, " or white villages. These are a series of picturesque towns nestled in the Andalusian hills in southern Spain, known for their distinctive white-washed buildings. This traditional architectural style, whose origins date back to the region's Moorish past, helps to reflect the sun's rays. This keeps the buildings cool during the hot summers and adds a unique character to these towns.
