Its peak was around the Gosannenn war of Ōshū (also called Later Three-Year War), the Genpei War, the Kamakura era and the Sengoku era. Chokugen is a broad style, which started to develop in the capital around the Genki (1570-1573) and the Tenshō (1573-1592) periods. It was transmitted in the Tsugaru region (West of Aomori prefecture) during the Keichō period (1596-1615). The Ōnaginata used is more than 9 Shaku long (about 2.75 m), with a blade of 1 Shaku 8 Sun (approx. 55 cm). The shaft is 7 Shaku long (about 2.10 m). Finally, the Ishizuki (the tip of the shaft) is 2 Sun long (6 cm). Regarding the specific techniques, they are characterized by wide movements similar to those of a wind or watermill. At the beginning of the Tokugawa era (Edo), the dimensions of the Ōnaginata were shortened to 7 Saku (2.10 m) when it was taught to women.
