This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the PS2. Gungriffon Blaze was a PS2 launch game. It's a mission based mech game similar in concept to Armored Core (which also had a game at the PS2's launch). You complete missions, and collect powerups to upgrade your mech. The series has it's roots on the Sega Saturn (I have a vid up of the original on the Saturn for those interested • GunGriffon (Sega Saturn) Gameplay ). The first issue that will throw many gamers off in this game is the control scheme. The game has many preset control schemes (a few of which mimic the Saturn's control scheme for fans of the series), but none of them feel quite right. Yes, there is a dual stick control scheme, but the conventional left stick moves and right stick aims is reversed. Anyone who's played pretty much any FPS console game released in the last decade will be quite taken aback by this reversal. In fact, it's extremely hard to re-train yourself to move with the right stick, and aim with the left. The only reason I was able to do it here is because I played Winback earlier, and that forces you to aim with the left stick (though I still had a few problems while taking the footage), so I already had a feel for aiming that way. It takes a lot of getting used to. The other control presets are just as awkward and unconventional, but the original Saturn version's control was also unique in that way. Those who can get past the control issue will find an engrossing mech game. It's not as heavy on the simulation as the AC series, but it's got plenty of action. I don't have Armored Core 2 on the PS2, so I can't really give you my opinion as to which was the better launch mech game for the PS2, but fans of these types of games (games where you get in a giant mech and blow the hell out of everything that moves) will find plenty to like about Gungriffon Blaze. Gungriffon Blaze is only available on the PS2.
