We have studied triangular numbers. We will now study patterns of square numbers with oranges. A single orange can be considered as a square of side 1. To make a square of side 2 you will have to add 3 more oranges. How many do we need to make a square of side 3? We need 2 + 2 and 1 extra, in all 5. To make square of side 4 we’ll need 3 here and 3 there and an extra in the corner, a total of 7. For making square of side 5 we will 4 + 4 and 1 extra, in all 9. So, from side 1 to side 2 we needed 3. From side 2 to 3 we need 5 more. From side 3 to 4 we need 7 more. From 4 to 5 we needed 9 more. For making larger squares we needed 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 oranges. For making a square of side 6 will need 11 more. Also 1 +3 = 4 is a square. 1 + 3 + 5 = 9 is also a square. 1 + 3 + 5 + 7= 16 is a square of 4. 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 = 25 is a square of 5.
