With this simple majority, his party did not even need coalition partners to form the government in both wings of Pakistan. But General Yahya Khan's martial law government, and the leader of the runnerup PPP, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, were adamant that the power would not be transferred to the elected representatives of the majority of the country. What happened later on is history. But here is a historical speech by Sheikh Mujib ur-Rehman made on 7th March, 1971, whereby he openly stated that the people of Pakistan had given him the mandate while the martial law administration was using delaying tactics in order to avoid handing over of the power to people's representatives.
