In the silence of the garden Where the bitter spices lay Heaven held its breath in sorrow Night refused to break to day Wrapped in linen, hope seemed buried Cold the earth and still the air Love lay still inside the darkness Death believed it held Him there But the grave could never keep The Shepherd from His sheep While the tomb was sealed above Him And His body slept in dust Down below the gates were shaking As the chains began to rust Calling every righteous name From the shadows they would come “Rise, you captives, come to freedom Your Redeemer’s work is done” Through the caverns of the ages Past the fathers and the kings To the prophets long awaiting Came the sound of freedom’s King Adam stirred and hope awakened David dropped his harp and cried “Here He is, the promised Savior” Light broke in where none could hide Keys of death within His hand No prison there could stand While the tomb was sealed above Him And His body slept in dust Down below the gates were shaking As the chains began to rust Calling every righteous name From the shadows they would come “Rise, you captives, come to freedom Your Redeemer’s work is done” Lift up your heads, with ancient roars The King of Glory comes Shattered bars and broken floors The victory has begun No more night, no more shame Every debt undone From the grave to endless day Salvation’s song is sung Then the dawn began to whisper Stone and soldiers felt the quake Breath returned to beaten lungs And death began to break Folded cloth and empty chamber Angels burning bright as flame “He is risen just as promised Jesus is His name” Now the stone is rolled away And the living Lord we see He has led the hosts of captives Into glorious liberty Every tongue and tribe proclaim Sin and hell overcome Christ is risen, Christ is reigning, Christ our everlasting Sun From the grave to endless day Jesus leads us home
