In the 1940s, construction began on this area for the sick and to isolate them from the population, with houses, a hospital, a crematorium, schools, administrative buildings and a church. Thanks to the advance of pharmaceuticals (and the change in the public mentality), the Abades Sanatorium became unnecessary and never received any lepers.
