The first thing I will mention about this review; it was to my surprise while doing last minute research I had just found out that the Arron 10 won the World Online Whisky Awards "Best Value for an Entry Level". Now I am not surprised that it was a nominee and the "Peoples Choice" winner. I recognized some of the other nominees that I have either reviewed in the past or have on my shelf trying to find the time to review. Here are some of the other nominees voted for at the OSWA . They were Glencadam 10, Kilkerran 12, Ledaig 10, Bunnahabin 12, and watch out for some of the lesser known like Loch Lomond 12, a fantastic but underrated dram. There were some other favorites in other categories as well. I love my scotch but I have wandered from my religious following of the Single Malt category to all whiskies, Blended, Irish, Canadian, Japanese, Bourbon, Rums, Cognac, Armagnac, Rum, Tequila, Gin, etc. And don't forget about one of the oldest beverages, Wine and how it connects to whisky. You get the picture. I have returned to my routes and I will only learn to appreciate and understand Scotch by tasting the other spirits and what is Scotch distilled from. Beer! A huge THANK YOU to Ralfy (Ralf Mitchell) and Roy (Aqvavitae), two cult whisky icons, for their collaboration to getting the OSWA happening. Now you and I, the consumers of the whiskies and spirits have a chance to show our knowledge and favorites. Maybe now the Beverage Company Giants might start listening to all of us whom they make their profit from. I know I have digressed a bit from the Arron Distillery and the two Golden Eagles that keep an eye on their whisky making. I have been an Arron whisky fan since the Arron 10 was introduced. This is a young distillery that was originally a partnership of two old friends, World War Two D-Day Veteran and Whisky Icon, Harold Currie and his architect freind, David Hutchison. Currie had the whisky knowledge and Hutchison, an Arron resident, had the connections. They both knew historically that in the early 1800s some of the best whisky in Scotland came from the 50 plus illegal stills on the Isle of Arran. This was not an easy road for them and had moments that it might not have happened if they had not persevered. They had financial & legal challenges as well as winning the support of the Island' folk's ecological concerns. And of course they had to get an agreement with the two Golden eagles nesting near the construction site. In 1995 Harold Currie was 70 years old when the magical moment arrived. The new made whisky was finally running through the first legally licensed stills in over 150 years. And to top off the excitement of a new distillery on the Island the Queen visited Arran on her last voyage of the Royal Britannica to open the new Visitor Center. The distillery was not profitable in the early years but with some new blood, smart management, a bit of luck as well as the experience of James MacTaggart they have turned things into a profit. Harold Currie did get the chance to see his vision come to fluidity. Unfortunately he had passed on before the second distillery, Lagg Distillery, got up and running in March, 2019. Let's get into the review. Slàinte Mhath
