We are joined by the amazing Maddy again, aka @maddastic on Instagram, here to teach you how to train your dragon. No, wait, how to draw a dragon .... that's right! Possibilities are endless with dragons. Unlike unicorns which are based on a real-life animal, dragons don’t always have a frame of reference. Dragons may be drawn differently depending on different cultural influences. In the West, dragons are described to be winged creatures capable of breathing fire, whilst in the East, they are depicted as serpentine figures with great intelligence. So Maddy drew inspiration from folklore and used a few references from nature to make her dragon feel realistic. So she decided to combine elements from 3 different animals to create her artwork: a lizard, a seahorse, and a bat. By taking a defining feature from each animal and combining them together, she was able to craft a whole new character that is unique, yet still immediately recognizable as a dragon. Sort of like “Build a dragon.” Want to see how she did it? Then watch the entire video to find out! This video is part of a bigger series called Vectornator Tutorials, which is meant to help you become a better illustrator and designer.
