[Note: this video had closed captions, CC, in English, Spanish, and Quecuha. Select the language with Settings in the controller bar.] Quechua, with 8-10 million speakers in South America, is the most prominent indigenous language in the world. However, it is endangered by the effects of globalization. The language has many varieties with different grammars and pronunciations that have developed within isolated communities. Irma Alvarez Ccoscco, a Quechua activist, believes that Quechua peoples need to preserve the wisdom of their oral tradition in written form. She describes her efforts to spread Quechua literacy in the community workshops that she promotes in Cusco, Peru. Irma participated in the National Museum of the American Indian's Artist Leadership Program in 2014.
