Virtual Worksite Marker Boards

We have successfully undertaken testing of a Virtual Worksite Marker Board concept away from the Mainline Railway environment (Spa Valley Railway). The testing explored the use of geofencing technology to provide the demarcation of worksites using virtual worksite marker boards (Virtual WSMBs) in place of traditional worksite marker boards (WSMBs). This concept evaluation exercise is the first step in assessing the potential for geofencing technology to replace WSMBs to support the team with improving workforce safety during worksite set up and management, whilst also increasing the available working time. Using Network Rail Product Approved geofencing devices mounted on on-track plant and trains, the team has been evaluating the technology’s technical and operational capability and potential benefits. Over the next 6-12 months, the project will be undertaking further testing with the support of the Routes and Principal Contractors to define the processes to enable widespread adoption of the Virtual WSMB concept.
