The Poson Perahera organized by the Purana Viharastha Sri Mahindothsawa Society in Homagama for the 59th year in succession will parade the streets. The Poson festival commemorating Arahat Mihindu Thera, the Sanghamitta Perahera etc., are various Buddhist aesthetics which commenced during the era of the Buddha and can be said, is a special characteristic of the new social culture. The Poson festival was held to commemorate the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka and in memory of Arahat Mihindu Thera. In literature it is mentioned that a life-size statue was taken in a procession (Perahera) and it should be recalled that it developed into a huge cultural contribution, gradually. The Homagama Purana Vihara is an ancient temple of the Hewagam Koralaya which brings about a national, religious and cultural reawakening. The Poson Perahera which commenced in the year 1960 will be held for the 59th time, and will parade the streets on the night of June 10. This has been organised under the advice of Chief Incumbent of the Homagama Purana Vihara, President of the Homagama Shasanarakshaka Balamandalaya, Deputy Director of Education (Piriven) of the Ministry of Education, Shasthrapathi Madovita Vajirabuddhi Nayake Thera by President of the Sri Mahindothsawa Samithi of the temple, G. D. Chathuranga Lakshan, Secretary M. A. Eranga Lakshan, Treasurer M. M. Piyasekera and all other members as well as the Dayaka Sabha of the temple, the Vishakha Kulangana Samithi, the Siri Seevali Dhamma School, the Young Buddhists Association together with the contribution of all associations of the temple. Highlighting the identity of the Sri Lankan Buddhist Culture, this Perahera has been held for 59 years successfully, under the Anusasana of the Nayake Thero due to the proper guidance and dedication of the Sri Mahindothsawa Samithi. Although there were obstacles to holding this Perahera for four years due to the Corona pandemic and the bad economic situation in the country, this time even amidst various economic difficulties arrangements have been organised to hold the Perahera, this year. The Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha, the Divisional Secretariat Office, the police, the business community and people of the area together with donors have contributed with sponsorships to make this Perahera a success. This Perahera will comprise of elephants, upcountry, low-country and Sabaragamuwa dancers will be an attractive event. To ensure such a cultural contribution for 59 years, the Homagama Purana Vihara which is located in the Kelani Valley area has been always involved. The Homagama Mihindu Perahera which has created a national, religious, cultural and social reawakening in the Hewagam Koralaya is due to commence from the temple for the 59th time on June 10 with the patronage of Pannipitiya Vidyalankara Pirivena Kruthyadhikari Most Venerable Kekunawela Wanarathana Nayake Thera together with a large number of dignitaries including both laity and clergy. This attractive Perahera will start from the Homagama Purana Vihara at. 7.30 pm on June 10, parade along the Highlevel Road, Walawwa Road, Nagaraseema Mawatha along the Athurugiriya Road and return to the temple. The festival is the resident elephants’ time to shine. They are among the 90 pachyderms clad in elaborate costumes that play essential roles in the festival’s sacred pageants to invite fortune and rain to the country. The process of choosing elephants for the famed festival is selective, as no ordinary elephant can carry out the most important aspects of the sacred celebration. Tradition demands that the Royal Tusker’s physical features set it apart from the other elephants. Among those features are a perfect pair of tusks and a trunk, tail and genitals that reach the ground. Selecting and preparing the elephants require the work of experts ranging from caretakers to taillors to dressers. Their careful work demonstrates the crucial role that the elephants, especially the Royal Tusker, play in the famed festival. The chosen elephants and their mahouts – people who train and ride the elephants – spend two weeks in perahara location during the festival. elephant_lk, elephant.lk
