Rescuing a baby flying-fox on powerlines: this is Pussy's Bow

Pussy's Bow is a 3.5 week old baby Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who came into care after being noticed climbing around and flapping on her mother who had been electrocuted on powerlines; mum and baby were still high up on the lines, which required the energy company to get her down safely. Getting a baby down safely requires the power grid to be turned off for the area while the crew use a bucket truck to get up to the baby. For this little girl, we had quite an audience of locals, whose power was turned off and who probably had nothing better to do on a CoVid Saturday arvo. Oddly, of the people passing on foot, few bothered looking up to see the life and death struggle playing out above them. Pussy's Bow, right from the start, was bright eyed, outraged and active. She has the widest most lustrous eyes, and has done well immediately. She feeds well and, though I really want to keep her, it's better for her to go to another carer while I am busy rescuing and stabilising the babies who are still coming into care daily. She had a sooky moment on the first night, when I had to take her to bed with me so she stopped crying and we both got some sleep. I'm going to miss this little one and hope she continues to do well with her new carer. She will be with this carer til she's ready to go to creche. When the hand raised babies are 3 months old, they go into a creche, where they join other orphans and form a group. At this stage they'd be separating from this batty mums and be becoming more independent in the colony. In creche, at this age, they learn batty etiquette and how to live in a batty society. They shrug off their human mums and want to be with the other batties. When they are emotionally and physically ready, and uninjured, and around 4-5 months old, they’re put into a release cage under a colony and they can integrate into the colony and fly out with the wild bats. If they can’t find enough food, they can always come back to the cage for a feed. Support feeding is put up on the outside of the cage for as long as they are coming back and eating it. When the colony flies out for winter, they have fully integrated and fly out with them. Her name? In Australia there is a saying - up to Pussy's Bow... It means to be filled up to your neck/bowtie (with food) - or it can mean that someone is totally fed up about something, up to their limit or tolerance. A pussy's bow is a female's bowtie, like a bow around a kitten's neck. Our little Pussy's Bow had been having a bad day and she was up to pussy's bow with the whole thing, losing her mum and being kidnapped/rescued by the hairless giants. She wasn't a happy little girl and was grabby and stressy and upset about her new life as she was finding it. Yet she was able to fit into the routine within 24 hours and allow us to love her.
