A new materials science breakthrough could reshape sustainable construction. Researchers have discovered that replacing a portion of traditional sand with quartz quarry dust — a byproduct of stone crushing — can increase mortar strength by up to 71% after 28 days. The study, published in Scientific Reports, suggests that using approximately 10% quarry dust improves compressive strength from 10.8 MPa to 18.5 MPa while also increasing flexural performance. With the global construction industry consuming an estimated 50 billion tons of sand each year, sand mining has become a serious environmental concern.
