Ilton, is an attractive, small village in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, it's surrounded by rolling hills, countryside and forests. Nearby is Nutwith Woods, where the curious visitor may discover the Druid’s Temple. This Druid's Temple was created by philanthropist: William Danby in about 1800, a previous owner of the nearby Swinton Park. It's reported that he had the Temple built as a replica of Stonehenge, during a time of agricultural depression, which resulted in high levels of local unemployment amongst local farm workers. He paid the men a shilling per day and the result is a wonderful, mystical folly, which has recently become popular with visitors. It now serves as a picnic area for walkers and people staying in nearby holiday accommodations. More details can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilton,_... The easiest way to find it is to follow your sat nav to this postcode: HG4 4JZ, then follow the signs to the parking area. The Druids Temple is a short walk into the woods along a track. The track shows signs of becoming boggy and may not be easy to navigate for people using an ordinary wheelchair. The nearest town is Ripon.
