Several weeks ago, my Boy Scout troop went camping and hiking in Hocking Hills State Park, in South-Central Ohio. The park is full of Eastern Hemlock trees and there are lots of dead and decaying ones laying near the trails. As a conifer, Hemlock produces resin and is naturally self pruning. As the trees grow taller, the lower branches die back and eventually break off. As they die, the resin in the limbs flows back toward the main trunk forms a clot, or knot, of flammable resin. We know this as fatwood. Eventually, when the tree dies and falls, everything but the fatwood knots decays. When the tree decays sufficiently you can just kick out the knots and dig out the fatwood to use as fire starting material. My observation has been that Hemlock fatwood isn’t as easy to light as Pine fatwood. It does work, though, and burns hot! If you happen to come across some Hemlocks in your area, look for knots and take the time to dig out the fatwood. It will be worth your time! Ahi! Sua! Qul!
