St. Johannis Church (Johanniskirche) is one of Göttingen's most prominent landmarks! Since there were people praying inside - this being Sunday - I did not speak too much. Architecture and History: The church was built in the 14th century (construction began around 1300s) in the Gothic style. Its most distinctive external feature is the tall, slender tower that dominates Göttingen's skyline and serves as a key landmark in the city center. The interior has those beautiful geometric patterns on the columns - these painted decorations are characteristic of medieval church ornamentation. The church has a typical Gothic layout with high vaulted ceilings and pointed arches. The nave and side aisles create the traditional basilica form common in German Gothic churches. St. Johannis is located in the heart of Göttingen's old town (Altstadt), near the central market square. It has been a central part of Göttingen's religious and civic life for centuries, particularly important as Göttingen developed as a university town. Like most churches in this region of Germany, it became a Lutheran church during the Reformation and remains an active Protestant parish today.
