Quire Cleveland's Men's Schola under Artistic Director Ross W. Duffin, singing at Historic St. Peter's Church in downtown Cleveland, April 6, 2014. Cleveland composer Patty Stair was a friend and contemporary of Cleveland Orchestra founder, Adella Prentiss Hughes, and was a leader in such organizations as the Fortnightly Musical Club and the Singer's Club of Cleveland, both of which are still active today. Stair also taught for over 30 years at the Cleveland Conservatory of Music, which was affiliated with the College for Women (later Mather College) at Western Reserve College. "So sweet is she" actually begins, "Have you seen but the white lily grow," which makes it recognizable as a lyric by the Renaissance poet and playwright, Ben Jonson, set as an exquisite lutesong in the early seventeenth century by theatrical composer Robert Johnson. In fact, Stair calls this setting for men's voices "a madrigal."
