Attorney General Condemns European Commission's Report

Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi has criticized the European Commission's naming of Trinidad and Tobago on a list of countries with what it describes as weak anti-money laundering and terrorist financing regimes. Addressing the issue at a workshop hosted by the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (ACAMS) on Friday, Mr. Al-Rawi said the Commission's reference to Trinidad and Tobago's appearance on a compliance document as produced by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), is a mischaracterisation of what the FATF's role is. However as it relates to the second part of the listing, which highlights the lack of international cooperation regarding the global forum, the AG was firm in making it clear, that government is not in disagreement with this. Other countries including the United States and Saudi Arabia have also spoken out, condemning the commission's report.
