Research and action for sharks and rays conservation Sharks and rays are essential to the health and balance of reef ecosystems, yet many elasmobranch species are in serious decline due to overfishing, habitat loss, and unmanaged tourism. In this session, students engaged in NGOs in Mexico and Guadeloupe will present fieldwork and conservation efforts focused on: The ecology and behavior of local shark and ray populations The impacts of tourism, including diving and feeding practices Strategies for community-based conservation, co-developed with fishers and local authorities Discussions will address both scientific findings (e.g., nursery use, migration corridors, human-animal interactions) and the practical challenges of implementing protection in busy coastal zones. This session contributes to: SDG 14.2 – Protect and restore ecosystems, through the ecological role of sharks and rays in reef health SDG 14.5 – Conserve coastal and marine areas, by supporting science-based marine tourism regulations SDG 14.B – Access for small-scale fishers, via participatory conservation approaches In line with UNOC 2025, it emphasizes the need for evidence-based governance, youth engagement, and collaborative solutions to marine species conservation.
