In this video, I walk through three practical ways to source a VA, based on more than a decade of working with them across my own businesses. I start with onlinejobs.ph, a platform created by John Jonas that’s become a go-to place for finding independent, home-based Filipino virtual assistants. It works like a matchmaking site: VAs post their skills and experience, and business owners can browse, shortlist, and negotiate directly. It’s an excellent option if you’re comfortable managing everything yourself — salary discussions, working arrangements, and making sure the person is actually online and working. I’ve used home-based VAs myself in the early days, and while it absolutely can work, it does take a bit more oversight. Then I move on to Upwork (formerly Elance). This one’s fantastic if you need specialist freelancers for short-term or project-based work — things like book editing, coding, design, audio, and so on. I’ve hired people there who’ve supported me for more than ten years. But it’s not ideal if you’re looking for a long-term, full-time virtual assistant. It’s very much built around gigs. Finally, I talk about VA agencies, or business process outsourcing centres. And yes — I declare my interest openly — I own a VA agency in the Philippines called Virtual Done Well. I explain how agency-based VAs work differently: dedicated recruitment for each client, HR and IT support, proper office facilities, reliable infrastructure, and a fully managed arrangement where we handle payroll, compliance, health insurance, and replacement if someone doesn’t work out. In our case we’re even set up as a not-for-profit, supporting charities on behalf of clients.
