Old habits die hard. I’m used to holding and moving a trowel to skim coat or spread adhesive. Neither of these surfaces will be a part of the floor’s final appearance, so consistent pressure is all that matters. In the case of decorative toppings, as I’m slowly learning, skim coating techniques need to be forgotten. The video shows how muscle memory and confidence overtakes the learning process. As much video as I’ve watched, and all the pros that have tried to help me, my old thinking had me started out wrong. Thankfully this is only the base coat that will be covered by three more coats. It’s the perfect step to let the novice practice. On the positive side, the mistake was recognized and corrected (and re-corrected). Overall the surface is good, but the productivity lagged. The next coat will be dedicated to improving the speed.
