Various of worshipers praying STORYLINE: A protest took place on Friday at the grand mosque in Indian-controlled Kashmir, as worshipers voiced their discontent and demanded the immediate release of prominent separatist leader and chief priest Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. The demonstration was fueled by the authorities' decision not to allow Farooq to deliver the Friday sermon at the grand mosque for the 200th consecutive Friday. Holding placards and chanting slogans female protesters congregated in front of the grand mosque to express their frustration with the prolonged detention. Since New Delhi revoked Kashmir's semi-autonomy in 2019, authorities have barred the chief priest from delivering Friday sermons at the grand mosque in Srinagar. Authorities often clamped down banning prayers at the mosque for extended periods. According to official data, the mosque was closed for at least 350 days in 2008, 2010, 2016, and 2019 combined. Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and is claimed by both in its entirety. Rebels in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir have been fighting New Delhi’s rule since 1989. Most Muslim Kashmiris support the rebel goal of uniting the territory, either under Pakistani rule or as an independent country.
